Recently\, Jacob has managed two new construction projects: 555 Larkin\, a 108-unit family development and 180 Jones\, a 70-unit supportive housing building. Jacob has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Occidental College. He is also a graduate of LISC’s Housing Development Training Institute (HDTI). [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”56494″ style=”vc_box_circle_2″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Ben Chuaqui\nPartner\, Van Meter Williams Pollack (VMWP) \nBen has been involved with all phases of the design and construction process and his interest as a designer is focused on not just creating good buildings\, but creating good spaces around the buildings.  Being both bicultural and bilingual – he is Chilean-American\, Ben brings multiple perspectives to each architectural project.  As a design professional\, Ben’s interests in the social landscape as well as the more technical and idiosyncratic aspects of wood construction have influenced his work. SUMMARY:Brown Bag Training: Making State Oversight More Equitable
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Recently\, cities across Northern California have incorporated the state mandate to Affirmatively Further Fair Housing (AFFH) into their housing elements. First passed in 2018\, California state AFFH law requires cities to promote access to opportunity\, integration\, transformation of underinvested communities\, and compliance with fair housing law. \nIn some ways\, the AFFH mandate transformed the nature of the housing element\, causing cities to implement a suite of production\, preservations\, and protection policies that previously would have never been on the table. In other ways\, AFFH rules failed to hold cities accountable\, leaving some of their most exclusionary practices in place. \nThis workshop brings together local advocates from across our region to discuss the promise of AFFH and opportunities to further increase its impact. She has served on the San Mateo Planning Commission since 2021 and served on the General Plan Subcommittee from 2022-2023\, where she helped draft the city’s new housing element. In this role\, Erin also collaborated with and managed public and private relationships within the City to streamline the permitting and construction processes and improve the quality and speed of housing delivery. Prior to her work at MOHCD Erin was the Director of Housing and Construction Manager at the Marin Housing Authority where she oversaw the housing activities for MHA including multi-family modernization\, BMR Loan and For-Sale programs. Erin also served for 9 years at the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and the Public Initiatives Development Corporation (a non-profit wholly owned subsidiary of the SFRA)\, prior to which\, she worked at AF Evans as a Sr. Project Manager and with a small independent developer. In this role\, he works closely with community partners to advance policy solutions related to affordable housing production\, preservation\, and tenant protections at the local\, regional\, and state levels. Amiel brings a wide range of experience in policy research\, data analysis\, and community engagement. \nPrior to Enterprise\, Amiel was involved in community stabilization and housing affordability initiatives with the San Francisco Planning Department where he supported research and community engagement efforts under the community equity division. Before this\, he worked for Homeownership SF where he coordinated tenant education\, foreclosure prevention and first-time homebuyer education programs\, organized housing clinics for San Francisco educators\, and led community outreach for affordable housing programs in San Francisco. \nAmiel has a master’s degree in city planning from University of California\, Berkeley where he served as a graduate researcher for the Urban Displacement Project and a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations from University of California\, Davis.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”82050″ img_size=”200×200″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_circle_2″ css=””][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=””]Nevada Merriman\, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy\, MidPen Housing \nNevada V. Merriman serves as MidPen Housing’s Vice President of Policy and Advocacy. Since 2007\, she’s held many positions in the Real Estate Development team\, including project manager. Most recently\, she was the Director of Housing Development for the Peninsula and Silicon Valley. She has contributed to developing over 3\,000 homes in Alameda\, San Mateo\, and Santa Clara Counties. She is a passionate advocate for including homes for extremely low-income and unhoused community members in the vision for our region’s future. She looks for ways to partner with local governments and build coalition with nearly every affordable housing advocacy organization in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas. \nIn 2022\, Ms. Merriman was appointed to the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority’s Advisory Committee. She is also a board member of SV@HOME\, and she co-chairs the County of San Mateo’s Home for All collaborative. She was a member of the All Home technical committee while it developed a Regional Action Plan. Before joining the committee in the fall of 2022\, Nicole served as legislative director to State Senator Josh Becker\, staffing housing\, transportation\, and budget issues for his office along with managing the overall legislative package. She also previously spent three years as a legislative aide to former Assemblymember (and former Housing Committee Chair) David Chiu and first joined the Legislature in 2017. Nicole’s community engagement work includes serving as a board member for the Sacramento Housing Alliance and she previously served as a founding board member\, Operations Director\, and Communications Director of the Capitol LGBTQ Association.
