ELPN: Drawings 101 – How to Read a Drawing Set

If you’ve ever gazed in despair at an enigmatic 1,000-page set of construction drawings, this training is for you! Drawing sets – the giant bundles of technical drawings used for permitting, construction, and maintenance – have a language and structure of their own. This training will help you navigate through them with confidence to find the information you need. We’ll cover the basics of how drawings are organized, dated, and revised. The speakers will also cover tags, schedules, and detail references so you can find doors, equipment, materials, and other common items. This training will culminate in a test of wits and strength in a drawing-reading exercise. The intended audience is folks who need to read drawings occasionally and don’t have a formal background in building design or construction, but all are welcome!

Erin Feeney, LEED AP Associate, David Baker Architects

Erin Feeney is an Associate at David Baker Architects. An architect focused on urban community design, Erin believes that design has the potential to enhance the sustainability and livability of the built environment, offering comfort and dignity to city dwellers. Erin is a core member of DBA’s Sustainability working group, leading our efforts around building performance to prioritize the human experience in our work. This includes performance standards and processes to enhance thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics, community engagement, universal design, and resilience.

Bryan Alcorn, AIA Associate, David Baker Architects

Since joining David Baker Architects in early 2019, Bryan has worked extensively in DBA’s modular practice, exploring the design efficiencies and opportunities of prefabrication. He grew up in a small town in Indiana and has practiced architecture in Atlanta, Michigan, and the San Francisco Bay Area. He was motivated to become an architect so he could synthesize the beauty of building with technical problem solving, toward the betterment of communities.

Kate Traynor, Project Manager, BRIDGE Housing

Kate Traynor is a Project Manager with a background in land use economics. She worked as a land use consultant for public sector clients for ten years and brings professional experience in market research, development feasibility, and fiscal impact analysis. Kate holds a Master of Regional and Urban Planning Degree from the University of California Los Angeles.
