Preventing Pest Infestations: Lessons Learned Using Integrated Pest Management in Affordable Housing

Regional Asthma Management & Prevention (RAMP) worked with two affordable housing properties facing severe, reoccurring infestations of cockroaches and bed bugs across multiple units to develop and implement a prevention-focused approach to pest management.  This session will provide an introduction to Integrated Pest Management (IPM), an overview of our project, and an examination of the results, highlighting key strategies and challenges.

Andrew Sutherland is the Urban Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor for the Bay Area, serving Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. As a member of the University of California’s Statewide IPM Program (UC IPM), Andrew serves as a conduit for IPM-related information and resources. His work focuses on developing, adapting, and implementing IPM strategies to assist pest control operators, pest management professionals, public agencies, schools, parks, public housing, and regulatory agencies involved with household, structural, and industrial IPM. His overarching goals include education about IPM principles, development of IPM programs for clientele, reduction in pesticide applications, and mitigation of surface water contamination due to urban pesticide applications.  Andrew received his doctorate in entomology from UC Davis.
