An anticipated new study about accessory dwelling units (ADUs) is being released by UC Berkeley’s Terner Center for Housing Innovation. Titled Unblocking the Market for Accessory Dwelling Units: Lessons Learned from Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, the study examines the impact of various policy reforms and programs on expanding the production of accessory dwelling units. Using Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, British Columbia as case studies, the report examines why some reforms have spurred more ADU construction than others while identifying best practices for other regions seeking to increase this type of housing development in their communities.
