The 2026 primary elections are Tuesday, June 2. NPH encourages every eligible voter to make their voice heard in the primary elections. Use this checklist to get ready to vote!

Below, you will find a curated list of voting resources. If you’re engaging your residents to vote, make sure to also check out our voter outreach materials.

Step #1: Voter Registration

Visit registertovote.ca.gov to register online. The deadline to register online is May 18. If you miss the deadline, don’t worry – it’s not too late to vote! California offers in-person same-day voter registration. You can conditionally register and cast your ballot at a vote center or polling place.

Have you moved recently, or changed your name? Visit voterstatus.sos.ca.gov to check your voter registration status so you can update your information if needed.

Step #2: Receiving Your Ballot

California sends a ballot to all active registered voters. Keep an eye out for your ballot in the mailbox beginning on May 4, 2026.

Step #3: Learn What’s On Your Ballot

Visit your county registrar’s website, which you can find below under “Nonpartisan Election Resources,” to learn more about what’s on the ballot in your community.

The Secretary of State provides an official voter information guide for statewide races at voterguide.sos.ca.gov.

Step #4: Filling Out Your Ballot

When you fill out your ballot, use a blue or black pen to mark your voting choices. Be sure to fill in the oval completely. Place the ballot in the provided envelope, seal it, and sign and date the outside of the envelope. (Don’t forget to sign the envelope on the signature line!)

Step #5: Returning Your Ballot

Drop your ballot at your nearest drop box, vote center, polling place, or in the mailbox as soon as you have marked your ballot. No postage is required.

Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day, and received by June 9, 2026. Returning your ballot as soon as possible will help ensure that it is counted.

Step #6: Tracking Your Ballot

Visit WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov to track the status of your vote-by-mail ballot and confirm that your vote is counted.

In-Person Voting You have the option to vote in-person. Find your polling place at sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place.

Know Your Rights You can find the California Voter Bill of Rights at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-bill-rights. If you believe you have been denied the right to vote, call the Secretary of State’s confidential toll-free Voter Hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683).

74% of Bay Area residents voted in the last general election. Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard. Thank you for being a voter!

Resources for Planning Voter Engagement Activities

The California Secretary of State provides a comprehensive guide to hosting voter registration drives. Nonprofit organizations must follow all applicable state and federal laws when conducting voter engagement activities. Nonprofits should always consult with an attorney about prospective election-related activities.
