STATEMENT FROM NPH’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AMIE FISHMAN ON LEGISLATIVE SESSION IMPACT FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING

RELEASE: CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE PASSES FIRST EVER COMPREHENSIVE REGIONAL HOUSING APPROACH
September 12, 2019
Daily Journal: “Regional housing tax effort part of larger package”
September 17, 2019
“The Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California is proud of the bold, visionary leadership we saw this legislative session, as lawmakers stepped up with housing solutions in response to our state’s communities in need. The Legislature passed several truly critical and transformative bills this session, including AB 1486, which will open up unused public lands for public good, like more affordable homes and AB 1482, which offers badly needed relief and stabilization to our family, friends, and neighbors who rent.

Here in the Bay Area, it cannot be understated how transformative NPH-sponsored AB 1487 will be. For the first time ever, the Bay Area is empowered to take a comprehensive, regional approach to our regional housing woes. A regional ballot measure will scale our solutions and meet the housing needs of all our neighbors, no matter their race or income, and fight for the Bay Area that we love.

We look forward to working with MTC and ABAG leadership to advance AB 1487, and all of our county and local leaders who have critical decisions to make locally about how to move forward on all “3Ps” of affordable housing solutions: Production, Preservation, and Tenant Protections.

We now call on lawmakers and community leaders at all level to continue this forward momentum, starting with the Governor signing these critical housing bills sent to his desk and working with the legislature next session to revisit SB 50, the More Homes bill, and AB 10 for sustained investments in affordable housing.

This session’s commitment and collaboration for housing solutions makes me incredibly hopeful about our region and state’s future. We thank our leaders and partners for their critical work on these bills, as well as housing victories SB 330 and SB 329.

Together, we’re realizing a vision for the Bay Area where we all have a safe, stable, affordable place to live!”
