AFFORDABLE HOMES TOP PRIORITY FOR BAY AREA VOTERS
NPH: Housing opportunity for thousands of families in three Counties if three measures pass

San Francisco, November 9, 2016 – The Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California and affiliated NPH Action Fund are monitoring election results on three county-level housing measures that would provide local, affordable homes for thousands of residents, especially those most at risk of homelessness and displacement.

All three measures appear strongly positioned to pass, though ballots are still being counted. A new California law provides that ballots postmarked by November 8 and arriving at Registrars within three days must be counted — and most Registrars will continue counting ballots received as late as Monday, following the Veterans Day federal holiday.

NPH and its members, developers and managers of affordable homes in the nine Bay Area counties played a strategic role in each of the campaigns, including achieving a 15% increase in residents’ voter registration and producing materials about voter registration in 7 languages.

“These measures hold great promise for thousands of Bay Area residents hurt by our housing crisis, especially for the lowest income families, individuals, veterans and seniors. If all three of these measures pass, local communities will have made a significant re-investment in Bay Area communities,” said Amie Fishman, NPH executive director.

“We are thrilled with the results so far,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez.  “We are cautiously optimistic that this trend will continue. Measure A is a game changer that seeks to end homelessness in Santa Clara County.”

“The passage of Measure A1 was a tremendous victory for seniors, working people, low income residents and the homeless who simply want to live in Alameda County in safe, affordable homes. I want to thank the tens of thousands of residents who stepped forward to address the housing crisis by supporting our $580M bonds with their yes votes,” said Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan.

“We are grateful to our community for its overwhelming support of Measure K, the 20-year extension of an existing sales tax that will provide the stable, reliable funding source San Mateo County needs to continue building affordable homes and delivering a wide variety of important local services,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Don Horsley.

“This is a clarion call from Bay Area voters. They want solutions to our housing affordability crisis and are willing to invest in a better and more just future for their communities,” said Matthew O. Franklin, NPH board president.
